What is the difference between as,since,because and for ?
All of us know that if we want to give a reason for something ,we can use the word because ,but if we write an essay or paragraph, especially if it is academic ,you have to vary your structure.We are going to tell you the difference between as,since,because and for.
1)as,since.
we use as and since when we give a reason to someone who already has known this reason,so as and since do not present new information.They can used either at the beginning of the sentence or at the end of the sentence.As and since are considered formal style in writing style.
Ex:
since we are too late,it is better to go home.
Ii is better to go home,since we are too late.
2)Because
we use the word because, if the reader or the listener does not know the reason for something. That means that the word because presents new information .We sometime use it,when we want to emphasize the reason,as it is the most important part of the sentence.
Ex:
-Why were you absent yesterday?
*I was absent because my father was ill.
we can neither use since nor as because the listener does not the information.it is new for him.
3)For
we can use the word for to give a reason .It has the same meaning of because,but it is commonly used in formal English writing style .you have to make sure that for-clause never comes at the beginning of the sentence.For -clause is considered dependent clause,so It can not stand alone .
I decided to give up smoking,for I was ill.
